Hearts were broken when Caitlyn the dog was found with her muzzle bound shut with electrical tape. She had been left that way for so long that her muzzle was bloody, black, and disfigured. Many wondered what would happen to the monster who did this to her, but now, we know his fate, and it’s being called “as good as it gets.”

William Dodson, 43, drew more than his share of negative worldwide attention for his abusive actions towards an animal. The 15-month-old chocolate pit bull mix was found on the porch of a South Carolina resident who called 911 after seeing what horrible shape she was in.
“I have a dog that’s here at my house that I found and the dog’s mouth is taped shut with electrical tape, tongue hanging out its mouth, bleeding, and his tongue is completely black,” a 911 caller said, according to ABC affiliate WCIV. “I just don’t know what to do.”
Inside Edition reports that he has now been convicted of animal cruelty and sentenced to five years in prison. The five-year term is the maximum possible for felony animal cruelty in South Carolina.
“This is as good as it gets us. Five years is the maximum possible penalty for felony animal cruelty in South Carolina,” Charleston Animal Society’s Aldwin Roman, whose organization was responsible for the rescue of Caitlyn, said in a press conference. “This is a violent crime, there’s no way around it, and if it’s not considered one, that’s just ridiculous.”
However, Dodson story doesn’t end there. In fact, he got some more bad news. Dodson had been free on bail from a previous charge when he chained Caitlyn and taped her muzzle, cutting off blood to her tongue. Those who wanted justice for Caitlyn and punishment for Dodson got more than they had hoped for when he was given a 15-year sentence for gun charges.
While fleeing from police, he once tossed out a loaded pistol, cocaine, and marijuana. With 15 years on gun charges and 5 years for felony animal cruelty, it seems that justice is being served. Since 5 years is the maximum Dodson could receive for his crimes against Caitlyn, the added 15 years for the gun charge makes this “as good as it gets.”
Now that Dodson has learned his fate, you may be wondering what became of Caitlyn. According to LifeWithDogs, she “needed surgery on her badly lacerated cheek, numerous laser surgeries for facial scarring, hyperbaric oxygen treatments, and surgery on a wounded salivary gland. Cold laser therapy and the oxygen treatments greatly reduced the amount of tissue loss from her tongue damage.”
After all of this love and care, the almost four-year-old chocolate pit bull is doing well. Now that her former abusive owner, Dodson, has been sentenced, Caitlyn’s foster family will become her permanent family. As you can see below, life is good for Caitlyn.

With all of the negativity in the media, it is good to see a story with a happy ending and justice served. Caitlyn’s story tugged at the hearts of many and inspired them to look for the positive in a sometimes broken world. It is good to see her sharing the love in her new home.
